After a week's worth of hard work, we took a vacation day of sorts, which did not include sleeping in. We were awake earlier than usual to meet the bus that was to pick us up at 9:00AM. We were joining all the workers in the church and spending a day at the beach, an experience Tito hoped would allow everyone to get to know one another better. It took about an hour and a half by bus to get to Boca de Rio (Mouth of the River), a beach city that is pretty cold, cloudy and lifeless in the winter time. We explored the wade-pool-like rocky areas and then played a series of games including tug-of-war, a team version of tag, and “football” (of course). Lunch consisted of barbequed chicken, barbequed chorizo, barbequed potato, a type of potato salad with beets, and steamed rice. Before we headed back to the church, we spent some time in worship lead by our hosts. They chose songs that we knew in English so that our worship session was a bilingual experience. Ricky and Tracie (a Chilean missionary and a U.S. missionary who are leaving the church in Tacna to get married, raise support, and start a new work in Cuzco) were recognized by a variety of speeches and gifts after our time of worship. Then we got on to our bus and started our 90 minute journey back to Ciudad Nueva. Along the way the police authorities signaled for the bus driver to pull over and we were forced to take passengers and transport them into the main part of the city.
