Tired but still excited, we arrived in Lima around 7:45AM local time (5:45AM California time). Customs was slow – more than half of us got a red light at the baggage check and had to have our bags scanned. Our next flight was supposed to be at 11 something, but there was a slight problem. They canceled our flight. We stood in a line outside the real line for the airlines for about two hours to make this discovery. Fortunately LAN likes their customers, so they put up all of us in the Sheraton Hotel of Lima. They provided both lunch and dinner for us, but we only had time for lunch because our next flight was around 6PM. The plane was a little late, but it didn’t matter too much to us. We had some surprisingly excellent coffee while waiting for our flight (Mark cannot do without coffee). By the time we got to Tacna it was late and most of us were exhausted, getting only an hour or two of sleep while visiting the Sheraton. Tito and Patty picked us up and we all experienced our first “Once” (pronounced ohn-say) for the trip which consists of bread, butter, maybe some jam and manjar (ask your children).
